HB1061 (2024) – New Hampshire legislation

2024-01-10. This written testimony was submitted to the New Hampshire House in support of HB1061 (2024), a bill “relative to motor vehicle stops of uninspected vehicles.”

Greetings, Representatives,

Please recommend OTP on this bill.

Mandatory vehicle inspections are only required by approximately half the states in the United States. The states that do not have them do not have less safe roads or drivers. Some states, such as N.J., have even gotten rid of their inspections over the past few years. These laws end up being nothing more than rent-seeking by the mechanics who perform the inspections. Reducing the inspection requirement to a secondary offense, like many states do with their seatbelt laws, would be a good step in the right direction.

Thank you.
